Original Acrylic on Canvas Paintings
Whether you like to purchase art for the beauty of the piece itself or to blend in well with your decor, art is something that is very personal. I would like to help you make a statement about your personality and provide a piece that is an investment in your collection.
QUALITY MATERIALS: My artwork is created on cotton stretched tight-as-a-drum canvases. They include wedge slots, and the edges are rounded and beveled away from the canvas. The staples are at the rear of the canvas so that the painting can flow round the corner and onto the side of the the canvas frame. This allows a three dimensional contemporary feel. Neither a frame or glass are required.
My style of art requires a smooth "fine tooth" canvas, I use a premium gesso primer, this helps to enhance the white reflective base to make the painting more illuminous.
The acrylic medium allows me to paint quickly due to its fast drying properties. This gives me the freedom to evolve my artwork as my imagination allows. Once the painting is finished, I arrange a professional photographer to record my work for future inspiration and also so I can retain my copyright to the image.
Once signed I then use a aerosol varnish to 'lift' the colour, unify the sheen and to protect the painting from dust and abrasion. I prefer to use a non-yellowing varnish with a matt finish.
UNIQUE AND RARE: My main series of paintings have been inspired by the cubist movement and in particular Juan Gris, who showed a 3D world as if looking though the facets of a crystal glass. This approach has given me the freedom to express myself and put my own interpretation on realistic situations and objects which have personal meaning.
My parent's are often the inspiration for my work, where I combine the different cultural backgrounds to show where I have come from. My mother is symbolised in windmills and the iconic flat Dutch landscape. My father is iconised by the sunrise and rolling hills round Fairview in New Zealand, which appear on my grandfather's “Cloake's Honey” tin. I am the wind, sometimes restless, calm, a blustery nor wester or breezy. My work has underplaying environmental themes, how fragile our mother earth can be and most recently the realisation of the environmental impact of something much greater than ourselves - the Canterbury Earthquake. The wind helps to portray movement and time. By incorporating this fourth dimension, I feel that I am evolving my own unique painting style.
My ideas come from a range of themes that I like to revisit and refine. For me the advantages of painting in a series are to explore a story, colour, subject, technique and an emotional response. Although the themes may be similar over a series of paintings each artwork is entirely unique.
AUTHENTIC: All of my artwork is signed in the bottom right corner and on the rear of the painting, usually in orange paint. All of my artwork comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
INVESTMENT APPEAL: Over the last 10 years I have been working towards emerging as an artist. Although I do not create huge volumes of artwork I have a conscious goal of moving into bigger and bigger shows with more clout. I hope that as my skills mature, my past, present and future work will gain in interest and value.
At the end of the day my feeling is that if we make thoughtful artwork choices and view each piece of art as something we love and an investment, we will always find a special place for art in any home regardless of decor. My colour's are wide and sizes are varied to offer different compositions and price points.
The artwork that I create are like sign posts of my life's journey, they carry an ancestral and environmental theme. I hope that you can find your own interpretation and that my art can be statements about you, your taste and personality - something to enjoy and share.
